Leader and
Team Assimilation (LTA):
strengthening the relationship between leader and team
The Leader and Team Assimilation process (LTA) is a powerful methodology for quickly developing and improving the relationship between a leader and their team. This process is recommended for both very experienced leaders and those just starting out. It promotes open, two-way communication, essential for group success and harmony.
Purpose of LTA
The main objective of LTA is to create a solid foundation of communication and understanding between the leader and his team. Specific goals include:
Develop and quickly improve the relationship between the leader and his team.
Promote open two-way communications between the leader and their team.
Helping leaders, regardless of their experience, integrate effectively with their team.
Advantages of the Process
LTA offers several significant advantages that benefit both the leader and the team, promoting a more collaborative and productive work environment.
Opportunity to listen to enquiries
It allows the leader to hear, first-hand, the team’s initial concerns and questions.
Self-presentation
It gives the leader a chance to talk about themselves, their business philosophy and share their expectations with the organization.
Repeated use
Many leaders use LTA repeatedly throughout their career in the organization to keep communication open.
Valuing employees
Employees feel more valued as their opinions are taken into account, promoting an environment of respect and collaboration.
Who, How and When to Implement LTA
When to implement: the process must be carried out after the leader has already assumed his responsibilities and interacted with the team.
Who participates: Participants should include employees who report directly to the leader, and may also involve a broader group if necessary.
How to implement: It is generally led by an external facilitator to ensure the confidentiality and neutrality of the process. It can be carried out at the workplace or in a hotel ballroom.
Duration: approximately 4 hours, including leader preparation and the “ debriefing ” session.
LTA steps
Step 1: Preparation and Invitation
Initial contact: the HR manager contacts the leader to discuss the assimilation process.
Invitation to employees: the leader sends a written invitation to employees, explaining the objectives and reasons for the meeting.
Start of the meeting: the leader starts the meeting, introduces the facilitator and then leaves the room for approximately 2 hours.
Step 2: Feedback session
Questioning: The facilitator leads the discussion with the team, posing eight questions to capture individual and collective feedback.
Recess: After the discussion, the group goes into recess for 45-60 minutes.
Review with leader: The leader returns and reviews responses with the facilitator privately before reconvening with the team.
Step 3: Review and Closing
Collective review: the leader and team review the notes generated, with the facilitator intervening as necessary to maintain focus.
Closing: the leader thanks the team and informs that the notes will be formalized and distributed. An action plan is established to resolve items requiring attention.
LTA follow-up
When to carry it out: generally carried out between 6 and 9 months after the start of the process.
Purpose: Provide ongoing feedback on leadership style and promote team alignment and effectiveness.
Duration and questions: faster process than the initial LTA, with five main questions for assessment and feedback.
LTA is a methodology developed to facilitate integration and strengthen the relationship between leaders and their teams. Since its creation by GE in the 1970s, it has been widely used by leaders at all levels to promote open communication, trust and high-level performance.
